Impact highlight:
Over 200 adolescent girls and women reached in eight months
We're very excited to share the latest impact insights from our girls' shelter & empowerment program in Cúcuta, Colombia!
From October 2022 to June 2023, more than 200 adolescent girls and women participated in empowerment and human rights workshops at our XOCO-MDYM empowerment house and shelter. The majority of women and girls in our programs are refugees from Venezuela and from Afro-descendant communities in complex situations of gender-based violence.
Additionally, the traction of this innovative program has attracted further support from the international community which has allowed us to support another 180 survivors of sexual exploitation. Our shelter provided the interim space to connect these survivors with housing support as the first step towards independence.

Our girls' shelter provides a home for homeless refugee girls to escape sexual exploitation and - as highlighted by the impact stats above - has become a crucial platform to support many more women and girls in the most difficult situations of gender-based violence.

The Challenge
The Covid-19 crisis is pushing girls into sexual exploitation at unprecedented speed. Existing solutions focus on short-term protection, support and training for low-skilled and informal jobs . While immediate interventions are critical and faster to access, it usually keeps women and girls just above the poverty line and highly vulnerable to economic shocks.

xoco’s leapfrogging academy
We are connecting the dots between grassroots women’s organizations and forward-thinking companies to empower adolescent girls to escape GBV and leapfrog to skilled jobs in the digital economy through an innovative digital education program, XOCO’s Leapfrogging Academy.
This program targets the most marginalized adolescent girls and prepares them for the most exciting jobs of the future. The solutions are holistic and will protect girls from GBV and empower them to live a self-determined life and reach their dreams.
System-level change
We run global initiatives to promote system-level change:
Gender Lens Investing Resources Hub hosts sector- and theme-specific primers on how to get started in the gender lens investing journey as well as new tools tailored to real-time demand from investors and entrepreneurs.
Shifting Capital is a podcast featuring inspiring female fund managers, entrepreneurs and role models in STEM.

XOCO’s Leapfrogging Academy
accelerating from education to jobs
XOCO Leapfrogging Academy is an accelerator program that prepares adolescent girls for future jobs in the digital economy. The accelerator starts with a summer school and continues with an on-going digital education program broken down into multiple 3-month sprints. Leveraging gamification, the main program allows participants to reach different levels and focuses on the range of horizontal skills relevant to succeed in the digital economy of the future. Complementary side tracks offer opportunities for specialization.

your role and impact
This year, we launched our Pilot Program in Cúcuta, Colombia (Venezuelan border). Many girls get stuck in Cúcuta while fleeing Venezuela due to the devastating humanitarian crisis. Most girls face abuse of power and gender-based violence (GBV) on the migration journey, are targeted by human trafficking networks and pushed into sexual exploitation. As a result of GBV, many refugee girls in Cúcuta have a baby, and no access to a safe home.
